Gloria Berger Smith, 80, most recently of Clermont, GA passed away peacefully on July 29 surrounded by family.
Born in Pennsylvania in 1944 to Emily and Frank Spragg, Gloria lived a life shaped by creativity, independence, and strong relationships. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Donald, and her husband Leonard “Lenny” Berger.
Gloria was the mother of Andrea Trowell (Doug) and Michelle Rabold, and grandmother to Emmy, James, and Sophie. She was exceptionally close to her daughters, and they spoke daily—a bond that brought strength, humor, and comfort to all three of them.
Over the years, her family expanded in meaningful ways. Through her marriage to Lenny, she grew very close to his children—Steve, Nancy, Amy, and Randy—and their families. She also shared a lasting friendship with Robert “Bob” Berger. For the past nine years, she was married to Steve Smith and built connections to his children—Sarah, Naomi, Anne, Gretchen, Rachel, and Ben. During their marriage, Gloria witnessed true Christian servanthood in Steve’s daily care, support, and quiet dedication.
Earlier in her life, Gloria worked as a flight attendant for Eastern Airlines—a role that suited her sense of adventure, attention to detail, and warm presence. Her time there brought lifelong friendships and memories she treasured.
Gloria had a deep love for animals, especially her cats, and enjoyed birdwatching, gardening, and arranging flowers. She found peace in the mountains and loved hosting friends and family, whether after a day on the ski slopes or while watching football. She was a perfectionist in all she did—from decorating her home and organizing her closets to preparing meals and beautifully wrapping gifts.
She will be remembered for her sharp eye, strong will, and the care she showed to the people and animals in her life.
A small family gathering at a later date is being planned to celebrate Gloria’s life. W. R. Strickland & Sons, Clermont, Ga.
